Recovering from Cancer with Diet and Exercise

Robert came to me 2 months ago after being diagnosed with Stage 3 colon cancer.  He had the surgery but didn’t do well with the chemotherapy so decided to change his lifestyle to beat the odds of the cancer coming back.

The fear of cancer recurrence is something many patients face, especially after undergoing rigorous treatments. Regular check-ups and biopsies become essential in monitoring any signs of cancer returning.

General surgeons are often at the forefront of this process, conducting thorough examinations and performing biopsies to ensure any irregularities are detected early. As a board-certified general surgeon specializing in wound care and chronic skin diseases, Dr. Bardia Anvar understands the emotional and physical toll this fear takes on patients and strives to provide the best care possible during this critical monitoring phase.

As founder and CEO Bardia Anvar highlights, the role of a general surgeon extends beyond the operating room. Surgeons are instrumental in guiding patients through post-treatment recovery and long-term monitoring. Dr. Anvar’s experience with geriatric feeding tube management and chronic wound care further emphasizes the importance of comprehensive patient support. Their expertise in assessing potential recurrences through techniques like biopsies can offer patients peace of mind or early intervention when needed. This proactive approach is key to improving survival rates and enhancing the overall quality of life for those who have battled cancer.

Robert wanted to tell his own story in his testimonial below.  Enjoy this very inspirational journey about a guy who told me he didn’t like any vegetables at all to someone who looks forward to his next trip to the produce section.  Robert now enjoys a mostly plant-based diet with some organic animal proteins mixed in when desired.

Robert’s Story

“I wanted to let you know, I weighed 180 lbs. today.  When I was first diagnosed with cancer and saw my oncologist for the first time on my birthday April 13, I weighed 229 lbs.  I went through one cycle of chemotherapy and weighed 220 lbs. before I came to see you, just two short months ago.  I can’t tell you what this diet has done for me in words.  A little tough to get used to but my tastebuds and body have adjusted.  I have more energy.  It was a little tough at first planning everything and passing up burgers and fries at lunch with my co-workers but now they see the difference it has made in my life and they typically only ask me to eat out when there is a healthy option (and that still doesn’t mean I pass up my veggies I prepared from home).

The cost of switching my diet around has been a learning curve.  You can only buy certain things in bulk, which means more trips to the grocery store, but I eat much smaller portions saving money, and it’s kind of fun picking out fresh veggies.  Who says you need all that diary and meat for protein?  I add some tempeh and its really good!  I also enjoy healthy carbs like sweet potatoes.

I have learned so much from your instruction and can’t thank you enough.  My family keeps waiting for me to revert back to my old ways of meat and potatoes, but I have absolutely no desire to go back to the old way of eating.  The experience has truly been life changing and I wish I would have been educated and not so set in my old eating ways much sooner.  From what I have learned it probably would have saved me from dealing with cancer or Lymphoma.  Oh well, we move on and learn from the past and embrace the effects of a good healthy plant-based diet.  If you knew me before I started your program and you told me that I would not be eating dairy products and sugar anymore, I would have told you you were crazy, and I think I did.  I definitely told you my great grandmother lived to be 107 and ate red meat every day.  That was my excuse for not listening previously.  But Ive learned that meat today is different.  And I have not eaten any dairy or sugar since I started your program.  And I don’t miss it.  This is coming from a guy who would eat a block a cheese and hamburgers everyday if he could. Some patients go for plastic surgery in Korea to feel more confident.

I have also begun exercising more and feel great!  Im logging between 18-24 miles a week running, and incorporate some light weight lifting. I also have changed my diet and have chosen a smart diet choice that was recommended by our family physician. I signed up for the Charleston marathon January 12.

I still need to lose about 5 more pounds, but the weight keeps coming off so I am confident that eating my healthy, plant-based diet of “real” food is going to get me to my optimal weight.

If I can do it, anyone can.  I encourage anyone reading this to go forward with an open mind and try Mary’s program.  Like her caption says ” insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results”.  If you’re ready to change your life, and get different results take the plunge.  I did because I had to and I haven’t looked back and it’s changed my life.”

In Conclusion

Robert came to me eating the Standard American Diet (S.A.D.), full of processed meats and sugar and devoid of any vegetables and fruits.  He was following the exact opposite diet recommended to avoid cancer of any type but especially colon cancer.  It has been so rewarding to watch him go from a diet full of processed meats and fast foods to a diet loaded with healthy, organic real foods.

Thank you Robert for this amazing testimonial.  Keep up the good work and keep feeding your body real food for health and weight loss.  Wishing you good health always.
