How To Reverse High Cholesterol and Diabetes

Sometimes people just have to be ready to make a lifestyle change and that’s exactly what happened to Kim.  Kim had let a divorce get in the way of her taking care of herself.  Over a few year period she had packed on 30 lbs., was borderline diabetic and had high cholesterol.    She was a very active person before her divorce and although she never had to watch her weight, she always made good food at home for her family each night.  The stress that comes with life changes and entering those pre-menopausal years caused her to pack on the pounds.  In late June Kim had a physical where she weighed in at 162 lbs and was told she not only had to lose weight but she had high cholesterol and was on her way to becoming diabetic. Kim came to me for Nutrition Coaching and the lifestyle changes began.

Kim loves to cook and one thing she always did right was cook meals for her family from scratch and she had started to buy some processed and fast foods.  As a single mom who works full time, she managed to find the time to cook most nights but her cooking was not exactly low calorie.  The first thing we worked on was getting her  to take her love of cooking and transform it into healthy, lower calorie meals for her family to help both her and the kids get healthy and lean.  This was a good start but without some accountability, Kim and her kids were still eating too many calories to see any significant weight loss.

I think Kim was really ready to lose weight but it was time to take her program a step further.  Kim signed up for a Lifestyle Diet Plan where I gave her a personal plan to meet her goals based on her likes and dislikes as well as her lifestyle.  In addition, I began to monitor her food logs every day as she logged in Lose It.

Once Kim became accountable to what she was eating she realized where all the extra calories were coming from in her diet.  I encouraged her to make foods in advance so she was prepared to grab food for lunch and had dinners already prepared for the week so she didn’t have to worry after a long day at work what was for dinner.  This food preparation not only helped keep her on track but allowed her the time she needed after work to exercise when she would regularly have been cooking dinner.  She took her love of cooking and began making many of my recipes and adjusting her own recipes to make them clean.  It was a match made in heaven!

Kim was so successful and so quickly that she is a true inspiration to everyone.  Kim lost a total of 30 lbs. in 3 months and surpassed her original goal weight.  She now exercises on a regular basis, eats clean and enjoys her occasional cheat meal.  Her family benefits from lower calorie, healthy foods in the house and on the table as she no longer buys processed junk foods for anyone.   When I asked her what helped her lose the weight this is what she told me:

1.  First, nothing makes you wake up and see reality like a doctor telling you that you have some health issues because of your eating habits.  Despite knowing I needed to lose some weight, seeing the high cholesterol numbers and knowing that diabetes was just around the corner really opened my eyes.

2.  Logging my food and having Mary monitor it was incredible as I never was accountable to what I ate in the past.  I loved good foods but I didn’t realize how many extra calories adding to my cooking that truthfully I don’t miss at all.

3.  Mary’s recipes were truly “clean and easy” as she claims and preparing my foods in advance was key to being able to stay on track and have the time I needed in the evening to work out.

Congratulations Kim!  I am so proud of you and you look fabulous!  Keep up the good work and don’t ever forget this is your new lifestyle.
