Some of My Favorite Things For Summer
Summer is finally here! It seemed like the long, cold, rainy winter would never end but today I look out the window to a beautiful blue sky, the birds are chirping and it’s already 62 degrees at 7:30 am. I love all the green and nature bringing back its best face but with it comes bugs, sunburns and lots of sweat (especially for us folks living in the south). So today I want to share with you some of my favorite products for summer. Safe, chemical free alternatives for some commonly used products for the entire family.
Let’s start with sunscreen because most of them are loaded with chemicals that can harm our health. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) has new research to back these claims showing that the chemicals in traditional sunscreens disrupt the endocrine system as well as interfering with hormonal systems in our body such as thyroid or estrogen. One of the most common chemicals in sunscreen is Oxybenzone which is known to disrupt the endocrine system and is associated with low sperm counts in men and endometriosis in women. The EWG now warms against pregnant or breastfeeding woman using sunscreen containing oxybenzone, however most traditional ones have it. And of course, who wants their children exposed to chemicals of any kind especially ones that will mess with their hormones.
So, we know that we need a natural sunscreen for the entire family, however many of these are hard to apply, leave you covered in white and can be tricky to remove at the end of the day. This is of course because they do the job of coating the skin and acting as that barrier to protect us. I’ve been using natural sunscreens for years so I have tried many and found a few favorites to share with you today.
Babo Botanicals Daily Clear Sunscreen – An ultra sheer, lightweight and hypoallergenic sunblock for sensitive skin. The entire family can use this but you might want to keep one where you put on your make up so you can always be protected with this 40 SPF. Learn More
Everyone loves the look of having sun-kissed skin but at what cost? Possible cancer, brown spots and premature aging of the skin are all the down sides of tanning. Many self tanners contain harmful chemicals and smell terrible while tanning beds are proven to be associated with increased risk of melanoma. But I have recently discovered this great all natural, organic self tanner that is amazing! I am so excited to share this with you and I know you are going to love it.
Beauty by Earth Self Tanner – This is an amazing creamy self-tanner that leaves your skin feeling moisturized. The product is made with no parabans and all safe, natural ingredients that won’t harm you skin or health. In addition, this product doesn’t come off on your clothing when you sweat. The color is a sun-kissed bronze and has no harsh smell. Learn More
Many people have already switched to natural deodorants to avoid the aluminum that is associated with Breast Cancer and Alzheimer’s Disease. Finding a good aluminum free deodorant that works can be tricky. Here are a few that I recommend. Everyone is different so you may have to try a few before you discover what works for your body.
ThinkSport – No harmful ingredients, no animal testing and all natural ingredients make this a safe choice for a natural deodorant. It comes in many scents to choose from or unscented if you prefer. Learn More
Bugs, bugs everywhere! Oh my gosh, I can’t stand bugs and bees and they are just everywhere down south. Keeping the mosquitos and other biting bugs off my skin is a top priority in summer. DEET is used in most bug sprays and products and is known to be harmful to the brain and nervous system. Check out some natural alternatives so you can enjoy the outdoors without the bugs enjoying you.
All Terrain Natural Bug Spray – This bug spray was awarded Best Gear by National Geographic Adventure. It contains several natural oils such as peppermint, cedar and lemongrass that keep bugs away naturally without harmful DEET. Learn More
