Client Spotlight on Jillian – How To Reverse Pre-Diabetes

Jillian came to me in late January struggling to lose weight, not sleeping well, gut issues and low energy.  At 44 she was coming up on menopausal years and wanted to get her health in order and lose 30 lbs.  She loved to walk but was very sedentary the past few years.

When I looked at Jillian’s diet she was skipping meals and grabbing nuts and fruit all day to keep her going.  She would eat a late dinner, sometimes as late as 9:00 and it was a large meal.  About 3 times a week the meal was from a restaurant and at home it might be home cooked but it was always high carbohydrate with lots of pasta and rice.  At night, at least 5 times a week she would drink a few glasses of wine.

She wasn’t taking any supplements and she was deficient in vitamin D from a lab test.  Later she would also find out that she was pre-diabetic (although this was obvious by how she gained most of her weight in her belly).  Jillian was not receiving the nutrition she needed to have energy and stay healthy.  She was lacking in protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals as well as antioxidants and phytonutrients.  Her eating window started at 7:30 am eating nuts and didn’t end until well after 9 pm most nights.  This short window of fasting along with eating most of her calories late in the evening/night, was putting her into fat storage all night long especially when she drank the wine.

Jillian started with my on BodyDesigns Two Week Detox Plan and my Lifestyles Weight Management System which combined some personal training and  online training with diet and coaching.  She lost 6 lbs. on the Detox Plan  and started to feel better.  She went on to follow her Lifestyle Diet Plan and has lost an additional 32.5 lbs. to meet her weight loss goals.  Her body fat went from 31.4% to 19.6%.  She is no longer pre-diabetic, is sleeping well and has resolved her gut issues.

When I asked Jillian what helped her most she told me:

1. The Detox plan got me off the sweet cravings and made me learn how to eat during the day while I was busy working and not just at night.

2. Getting off alcohol for 2 weeks was key to helping with my sleep and weight loss.  Continuing on the Lifestyle Plan I did not go back to drinking wine each night which not only helped me lose the weight but also to improve my sleep and gut issues.

3. Making Mary’s recipes made it easy for me to get back in the kitchen for food prep and having foods on hand not just for me but for my family. Finding easy things to grab and take with me during my busy work days helped me stay on track during the day.

4. I kept in mind that my changes were important to teach my girls how to eat healthy and maintain a healthy weight which gave me even more motivation to make the changes.

Working out with Mary once a week and having online exercises to follow on the other days got me back in the habit of doing regular workouts and moving more in general.
