Healthy Apple Crisp
Few desserts capture the flavors and aromas of fall quite like a warm apple crisp. Traditional recipes, however, can contain surprising amounts of added sugar, flour, and butter—turning nutritious apples into a very high-calorie dessert.
This lighter Healthy Apple Crisp delivers the warm cinnamon flavor and crisp oat topping you expect, but without refined sugar or an excessive amount of butter. An allulose-and-monk-fruit blend provides sweetness with very few calories, while apples and oats contribute valuable fiber.
At approximately 135 calories per serving, it is a delicious way to enjoy a comforting fall dessert while staying on track with your health goals.
Healthy Apple Crisp Recipe
Servings: 6
Preparation time: 15 minutes
Baking time: 35–40 minutes
Apple Filling:
6 cups peeled and thinly sliced apples
2 tablespoons allulose-and-monk-fruit sweetener, or sweetness equivalent to 2 tablespoons of sugar
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
1 tablespoon arrowroot powder
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
¼ teaspoon nutmeg
Pinch of sea salt
Crisp Topping:
½ cup organic rolled oats
¼ cup oat flour
2 tablespoons allulose-and-monk-fruit sweetener, or sweetness equivalent to 2 tablespoons of sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
Pinch of sea salt
1 tablespoon grass-fed butter, melted
1–2 tablespoons water, as needed
Instructions:
1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Lightly coat an 8-inch square baking dish with coconut or avocado oil spray.
2. Place the sliced apples in a large mixing bowl. Add the sweetener, lemon juice, arrowroot powder, cinnamon, vanilla, nutmeg, and sea salt. Toss until the apples are evenly coated.
2. Transfer the apples to the prepared baking dish and spread them into an even layer.
4. In a separate bowl, combine the rolled oats, oat flour, sweetener, cinnamon, and sea salt.
5. Stir in the melted butter. Add water, one tablespoon at a time, until the mixture is slightly crumbly and can be sprinkled over the apples. Do not make it wet.
6. Distribute the topping evenly over the apple mixture.
7. Bake uncovered for 35–40 minutes, or until the apples are tender, the filling is bubbling, and the topping is lightly browned.
8. Allow the crisp to rest for approximately 10 minutes before serving. This gives the filling time to thicken.

Choosing the Best Apples
Granny Smith apples provide a tart flavor and hold their shape well during baking. Honeycrisp, Pink Lady, and Fuji apples offer more natural sweetness. For the best balance of flavor and texture, try combining one tart variety with one naturally sweeter variety.
Enjoy this apple crisp warm on its own or topped with a spoonful of plain organic Greek yogurt for additional protein. It is proof that a fall dessert can taste comforting and indulgent without being loaded with refined sugar, flour, and unhealthy fats.
