Client Spotlight on Dara – Listen to What Your HEART is Telling You
Dara began training with me back in October 2022. And, while she showed up very consistently to weight train, she struggled with consistency in her nutrition. Without making changes in this
area, her weight remained elevated over the next two years despite her dedication in the gym.
At 52 years of age, Dara was taking medication daily for high blood pressure, and her cholesterol numbers were high. Even with her determination to exercise, it was clear that her overall health picture wasn’t where it needed to be, and she often experienced a higher than normal heart rate during training sessions that left us both puzzled.
When Dara’s heart rate (during any form of exercise, even brisk walking) continued and she started experiencing chest tightness and increasing shortness of breath, it led her to having a
consultation with a Cardiologist. She described the feeling as if “someone was squeezing my heart from the inside.” To her shock and surprise, Dara learned she had a heart abnormality with her right coronary artery that could only be repaired with surgery. This was found to be a congenital heart defect that had gone undetected all her life until symptoms impaired her ability to be physically active. This condition explained the elevated heart rate she had struggled with during our workouts.
In October of 2024, at the age of 54, Dara had open heart surgery to repair this heart condition. It was a pivotal moment for Dara—two years after beginning her training journey, she was faced with a challenge that would test not only her physical strength but also her mindset and resilience.
It has now been 1 year since surgery and Dara has transformed her life in every way! In the past year she has lost 30 pounds and is back in the gym lifting the same weight strength she had achieved before surgery. Even more importantly, she has taken her nutrition seriously for the first time, leaving behind the sugar and carb-heavy habits that once held her back. By focusing on nourishing her body, she has given herself the best possible chance to heal and thrive.
The results have been nothing short of remarkable. Dara’s blood pressure and cholesterol are now back in the normal range. She feels energized, sleeps soundly, and approaches each day with a new sense of vitality and purpose.
When I asked Dara what made the difference this time, she told me:
“Listen to your heart. Listen to what your body is telling you. Going through such a big surgery made me realize how important my health is and I am not going to take it for granted. If you do what you’ve always done, you’ll get what you’ve always gotten–and that’s just not an option for me any longer! Being back to strength training feels empowering and making healthy food choices has not only helped me lose weight, but my skin has never looked better! At 55 years of age, I feel stronger, healthier, and more alive than ever.”
I am beyond proud of Dara. She has overcome obstacles that most of us can’t imagine, and her comeback is an inspiration to anyone who feels stuck or discouraged. Dara proves that with consistency, courage, and the right mindset, it’s never too late to reclaim your health and live life to the fullest.
