Client Spotlight on Tricia – Making It a Lifestyle, Not a Diet, for Success
Tricia was referred to me at the end of February with a goal to lose 30 lbs. She is a 45 year old, busy, stay at home Mom and teaching artist living in a rural New Hampshire town. Her access to certain foods is limited, but she also has a great wholesome lifestyle. She was exercising a few times a week with a video, some runs a few times a week (but averaging more like 4000-6000 steps) and weight training with kettlebells sporadically. Her goals were to lose the weight she had gained but also to learn how to be healthy well into her later years.
She started with a deep dive consultation, where I reviewed all her lifestyle and dietary habits to get a “big picture” of how we needed to address her personal plan. Because her diet was very high in carbs we started her with BodyDesigns Two Week Detox Plan to help her get off her sugar cravings and any inflammatory foods. After she successfully completed these first few weeks, she had dropped 8 lbs. She began her personal Lifestyle Plan at this time and we continued to work on lifestyle changes to help her be successful long term.
Tricia began doing some online weight training with me, twice a week, logged her food religiously every day and continued to slowly lose weight over the course of the next 5 months. Today she has lost her 33 lbs. but most of all she has made many healthy changes to her diet and exercise. She now weight trains 3 times a week, gets daily movement in on a regular basis and continues to eat a high quality diet.
What really stands out to me about Tricia though is that she did not just completely stop having some “cheat” meals or snacks along the way. She has enjoyed ice cream more than anyone I know and still managed to lose the weight. I love how she has made it a lifestyle without feeling deprived. She experiments with recipes and if she has a cheat meal she gets right back on track the next day.
When I asked her what made her successful in this journey she told me:
“Being accountable was key as before this I had no idea what was going into my body and without “seeing” it I could not have learned how to make these changes
Not having access to some of the products that would make my life easier, I was able to learn some recipes and tricks, with Mary’s help, to manage not just for me but for my family. Early on Mary suggested going for protein first if I was hungry for a snack and this was really great, simple to follow advice for me. My whole family’s eating habits have changed and we are all better for it.
Having biweekly zoom meetings with Mary really helped me to navigate and strategize about vacations, visitors, road trips and social events, so that when things came up I had a loose plan or a footprint of what would be doable, while not missing out.
Working out to build muscle and not just burn calories has been a life changing for me. I have always enjoyed working out and moving my body but never trained to gain muscle. Mary helped me with a simple weight training routine that rotates and has been very effective without being too complicated of too much for my busy life.
