How To Lose Weight After Menopause
Janet was referred to me by her doctor in the middle of June. Despite eating a healthy diet and working out with a trainer, Janet was unable to lose weight.Janet told me that no matter what she did or how well she ate she just couldn’t shed a pound. She also had a strong family history of breast cancer and wanted to make sure she was doing everything she could to prevent being a cancer victim. With menopause on the horizon, Janet was really feeling the pressure to get this weight issue under control before it got the best of her.
While interviewing her about her diet I discovered that she already ate very healthy foods, choosing mostly organic . Her downfall was a sweet tooth that seemed to get the best of her some days. I also noticed that many of her meals were too high in sugar and carbohydrates and not high enough in healthy fats and proteins. Most of all though she was eating gluten and dairy and complaining of some gut issues and inflammation. And last, but not least, she was not being accountable to her overall caloric intake each day.
Janet was ready to make a change! She was not only motivated to get it right but she was excited to make any changes that would not only help her to lose weight but also reduce her risk of breast cancer. Her diet was easy to plan because she really loved so many good foods and was also willing to make the changes necessary to see results and increase phytonutrients for cancer prevention.
Janet started out her plan in late June with my Two Week Detox to eliminate all gluten and dairy. Her start weight was 167 with a goal weight of 145. Within the first week of this detox she reported to me that her knees, which had ached her for years, felt great! She dropped a total of 9 lbs. in two weeks and felt incredible. From the detox she began her new Lifestyle Diet Plan and she logged in her Lose It app allowing me to monitor her daily. She has continued to lose weight each week and lost a total of 15 lbs. in less than a month’s time bringing her within 6 lbs. of her goal weight! What is most exciting to me is to see her enthusiasm about how much she loves her new plan and how great she feels.
When I asked Janet what made this “diet” work for her when all others failed she told me:
1. I think getting gluten and dairy out of my diet really did decrease my inflammation and allow my body to lose weight. The positive feedback of how good I felt only made me want to continue.
2. Being accountable to my daily intake was key as prior to this I might have been eating healthy most days but my calories, especially from carbohydrates. were too high.
3. I no longer crave the sugar and sweets since I took them out of my diet.
4. Mary helped me with suggestions such as replacing my regular ice cream with So Delicious Coconut Ice Cream that allowed me to still enjoy something I really loved. I was also able to travel out of town and learned how to carry along the foods I needed so I wouldn’t get stuck if I couldn’t find good food choices. I don’t feel deprived as I know I have so many new options that I love.
Janet is just an inspiration to everyone! I love her spirit and her desire to stay well and find that comfortable weight that makes her feel good without feeling like she is giving something up. She embraces her new lifestyle and everything it does for her rather than mourn over the things she has to limit or avoid. I wish her the best of luck as she continues to lose those last few pounds and enjoy her new healthy lifestyle for many years to come.
