Healthy Pumpkin Spice Latte

You would have to be living under a rock to have not heard about the horrible ingredients in the famous “Starbuck’s Pumpkin Spice Latte”.  Well, just in case you are still under that rock, let me fill you in on some facts.  Food Babe, who investigates ingredients in restaurant foods, did a full disclosure on the Starbuck’s Pumpkin Spice Latte and here is what she found:

* The second ingredient is sugar
* Contains carrageenan associated with intestinal cancer
* Natural flavorings (MSG and other unknown substances)
* GMO’s
* It contains 14 grams of fat, 9 of which are saturated
* A 16 oz. Grande contains 390 calories and 50 grams of sugar!  YIKES!

It’s no wonder that people come back for more – the MSG and sugar are both addictive making you crave another one.  These popular beverages will not only pack on the pounds but will do some damage to your health too.  But with just a little bit of time you can get in the habit of making your own healthy version at home.  Check out this recipe for a real seasonal treat.

Healthy Pumpkin Spice Latte

1 cup unsweetened coconut, almond, cashew or soy milk1 tbsp pumpkin puree<
1 scoop stevia
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
⅛ tsp ground cinnamon
tiny pinch ground nutmeg
tiny pinch ground ginger
¾ cup coffee

1. Heat milk in a small pot over medium-low heat, stirring constantly with a whisk, until the mixture begins to simmer. Add in the stevia, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger. Whisk the mixture until it becomes frothy or use a Frother.  I love this Frother.  It is so easy to use and simple to clean.
2. Add the coffee to a large mug, and pour the milk mixture on top.

Check out the difference between this healthy version and Starbuck’s Spiced Pumpkin Latte.  Notice that the calories are almost enough to satisfy an entire meal or more for many people. The sugar content alone is almost double what is recommended by the American Heart Association.  This drink is being compared using unsweetened coconut milk in the healthy version verses whole regular milk in the Starbucks version.  And while you can cut out the whip and use soy milk instead, the calories, fat and sugar remain high.
