Losing Weight with Hypothyroidism

At the end of August I received a phone call from a mother who was trying to get some help for her daughter who wanted to lose weight. She told me her daughter worked out hard doing Cross Fit and ate very healthy but just couldn’t lose weight. She had Hashimoto’s which is a thyroid condition where antibodies attack the thyroid gland and cause hypothyroidism (under active thyroid). She asked me if I really thought I would be able to help her because despite great efforts, nothing seemed to work.

As I tell you this story I need to just say that if I had a dollar for every time someone told me that “they know what to eat but just can’t lose weight”, I’d be rich! Mckenzie’s story is like so many of my clients who come to me feeling confident that they are eating the right foods. Mckensie came to me as a last attempt to lose weight having thought that her low thyroid function was the cause of her inability to lose weight. What she would learn is that not only was she eating some of the wrong foods but that they were actually making the thyroid condition worse!

Mckenzie is a 22-year-old college student. When she started working with me at the beginning of September her goal was to lose 24 lbs. When I looked at her diet I found that although she loved all the right foods, she was choosing too many processed foods that were high in sugar or would turn to sugar in her body. She lacked consistency and accountability so from day to day it was unclear if she was under or over her calories to lose weight. In addition, since she had Hashimotos, getting off gluten and dairy would be important aspects of her plan to heal her gut and try to help her fight this autoimmune disease.

Mckenzie was so easy to work with because she loved all the right foods and was willing and able to cook, plan and prepare meals and snacks. She started out with BodyDesigns Two-Week Detox Plan and lost 9 lbs. She immediately began her new Lifestyle Plan and after challenging gluten and dairy decided to stay clear of both.

Mckenzie continued to lose steadily on her Lifestyle Plan and has now lost a total of 24 lbs. to date and met her first goal! She is actually going to keep going because she wants to achieve another goal that she really didn’t see as possible just 8 short weeks ago!

When I asked Mckensie what made the difference for her with this new Lifestyle Plan she told me:

1. Starting off with the Detox Plan helped me to get rid of sweet and carb cravings. I felt great and I didn’t’ want to go back to my old eating habits.
2. Logging my food keeps me stay accountable as Mary will comment on my logs daily to give me feedback both positive or negative.
3. Trying Mary’s recipes have been great! I love the variety of foods and how easy the recipes are to prepare. As a college student I need simple.
4. I think of my plan as a way of life and I know it makes me feel better to eat this way so I don’t miss foods I gave up.

Mckenzie just got engaged to be married and I’m so excited for her to be looking and feeling good as she starts this next chapter of her life. Congratulations Mckenzie and wishing you the best of health and happiness alway!
