Tumeric is an herb that is widely grown and used in Southern Asia and cooked in many curry dishes as a spice.  It is part of the ginger family of plants and has a multitude of health benefits.Used as an alternative to conventional medicine, tumeric will help treat a range of conditions from cancer to depression.  The active ingredient found in this healing herb is curcumin, which is known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits.

Inflammation effects a person’s well-being, and can lead to our body’s immune system injuring itself. Chronic inflammation is thought to be a factor in heart disease, obesity, arthritis, and a host of other health issues. In fact, a recent study compared the effects of delayed onset muscle soreness for athletes, and found that those who took oral curcumin suffered reduced pain compared to those who ingested a placebo.¹

Antioxidants are important for our health to help us remove free radicals from the body.  Free radicals can damage the DNA of the cell and cause mutations that cause cancer and other diseases.²  Therefore, removing free radicals is crucial to disease prevention.  Tumeric is one powerful herb that can help remove free radicals from the human bloodstream, lowering the risk of age-related diseases of the heart, skin, and eyes. Turmeric and curcumin also powerfully impact the digestive system, and are beneficial in reducing ulcers and irritable bowel syndrome.

There are many ways to incorporate tumeric into the diet.  First, cooking with tumeric adds great flavor to many dishes.  In fact, in regions of the world where tumeric is used widely in the diet, certain cancers and diseases are hardly seen at all.  It is believed that there is a strong association with this herb and its healing powers.³

Tumeric Milk is another recipe that is easy to make and can be enjoyed in the morning or evening as a hot drink.  Check out Easy Tumeric Milk Recipe on how to make an easy version.

Adding tumeric to your morning smoothie is a great way to start the day off right.  Try my Chocolate Cherry Antioxidant Shake for a powerhouse of other anti-inflammatory ingredients along with tumeric.  Delicious and satisfying this has been my most popular smoothie yet.
